CCMBC mourns the loss of Eric Wingender

by Roger Villeneuve

Winnipeg, Man.– The Canadian Conference of MB Churches (CCMBC), together with the Quebec Association of MB Churches (L’Association des glises des freres mennonites du Quebec AEFMQ), is deeply saddened to announce the sudden death of Eric Wingender, (1957-2011, 54 years), vice-president and professor of theology at ETEM (Ecole de Theologie Evanglique de Montreal). Eric succumbed to a massive heart attack on the evening of Oct. 5.

The evangelical world has lost a great man, known for his exceptional ability to articulate the Christian faith within Quebec culture, and his bold vision for a re-engineered church in Quebec, says Gilles Dextraze, executive director of AEFMQ. Higher education has lost a pillar and thinker. And his family has lost a dear husband, father, brother, and son.

Wingender received an MDiv in pastoral studies from Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, and served as pastor of the MB church in Ste-Rose, Que. from 1988-1990. He joined the faculty of ETEM in 1996.

The Canadian and Quebec conferences express deepest condolences to Ric’s wife, Farrah, and their three sons, Jean-Franois, Sydney, and Spencer.

The funeral service will be held Sat., Oct. 15 at 1:30 p.m. at St. James The Apostle Church (1439 St. Catherine Street West, Montreal).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made out to ETEM, (4824 chemin Cote-des-Neiges, Suite 301, Montreal, QC, H3V 1G4, Phone 514-331-0878), designated to The Eric Wingender Foundation.
